Peaceful World is an independent international nonprofit organization. We research peace and nonviolence, translate and adapt educational materials, and create programmes and digital tools to make peace education more accessible worldwide.
The main question
War is not written into our genes. But peace does not arrive through good intentions alone. Human choices, social norms, institutions and education help shape when violence becomes possible — and how we can prevent it.

Not through a single breakthrough. Knowledge became a shared resource — through schools, clinical protocols, vaccination and cooperation.

About 10% of adults could read in 1820. By 2022, about 87% could read, while about 13% could not. ‘About one in ten’ conveys the reversal but rounds 13% rather than asserting an exact 10%.

WHO/UNICEF estimate that inadequate hand hygiene contributes to roughly half a million potentially preventable deaths a year. This describes the potential for prevention, not a historical count of lives already saved.
In an 1847 Vienna maternity ward, deaths fell from 18.3% to 2.2% after hand disinfection was introduced. This historical example and the global estimate are separate datasets.
From the first vaccine to worldwide eradication.
Edward Jenner demonstrated the first smallpox vaccine in 1796. The WHO declared the disease eradicated worldwide in 1980. The 184 years in between required vaccination, public-health work and international cooperation.
What these histories share
Knowledge reaches a few people first. Over time, many can put it to use. Social change takes sustained effort and institutions that help new practices endure.
From quantity to quality
Heat builds gradually. Boiling looks like a sudden change, but a longer process came before it. The image helps explain why sharing knowledge at scale matters. It is only an analogy: societies have no known temperature at which wars disappear automatically.

Knowledge of nonviolence has existed for centuries. Peace-education programmes have already been developed. But where they are needed most, accessible materials in people’s own languages are often lacking.
In 2023, UNESCO's 194 member states adopted a recommendation on education for peace. Adoption is not the same as implementation. A 2026 meta-analysis examined 90 interventions involving approximately 15,000 children and adolescents, finding gains in some conflict-resolution skills. It does not measure our ‘5’ trainer or prove that education alone prevents wars.

Are we ready for the power we hold?
When we study peace and violence, we encounter different explanations. We compare perspectives, check claims and seek a fuller picture.
Partial does not mean false. Many perspectives do not imply relativism. Compare, test and synthesize.
Understanding alone is not enough.
Power alone does not tell us how to use it. One way to develop responsibility is to practise nonviolent ways of relating: notice our reactions, choose our words, cooperate and develop shared norms.
Pause, listen, understand conflict, cooperate.
Words can preserve dignity and make dialogue possible.
Shared norms make dignity and nonviolence ordinary.
Repetition turns understanding into habit — and habit into culture.
Start with yourself. Don't stop with yourself.
Responsibility reaches beyond our own reactions. It shapes our relationships, our work, decisions in society and how we treat the living world.
